This Marketing Hack Sounds Dumb… Until It Works (Again and Again)

You ever get a message from a brand that feels like it was written by a malfunctioning robot with a PR degree?

It starts with “Dear valued customer”…

Rambles on about “core deliverables”…

And finishes with “please do not reply to this email.”

Hard pass.

No one talks like that in real life. You wouldn’t message your mate like that. You wouldn’t even talk to your dentist like that.

And yet, somehow—when it comes to marketing—people forget how to be people.

They write like they’re applying for a government grant, not starting a conversation.

Meanwhile, the stuff that actually lands?

Is usually dumb simple. Raw. Kinda scrappy. Sounds like it came from a real human, not a committee of middle managers.

It makes you smile. Or feel seen. Or just stop scrolling for a second.

And somehow… it works.

Again and again and again.

Let’s talk about why.

“Being Human” Is Still the Most Underrated Marketing Hack on Earth

Everyone’s obsessed with AI, algorithms, automation, ChatGPT, voice cloning, deepfakes, content systems, repurposing tools, 47 steps to brand omnipresence…

But they forget something critical.

People buy from people.

Not perfectly polished “brand voices.” Not corporate jargon. Not sterile, manufactured messages that sound like a dead-eyed intern wrote it with ChatGPT on level 3 formality.

People are drawn to people who sound like… them.

We’re wired for it. Tribal. Social. Emotional. We laugh, we cry, we scroll, we feel stuff. We remember the way something made us feel long after we’ve forgotten what it said.

So when a piece of content shows up that actually feels human?

It stands out like a good coffee on a Monday morning.

Real People Don’t Speak in Corporate

One of the biggest marketing lies is that everything must sound “Professional” all the time.

Yeah?

Tell that to the brands actually winning on social right now.

Half of them sound like your cheeky mate in the group chat. The other half are straight-up posting memes with captions like “when the client says can you just make it pop a bit more.”

And the reason it works?

Because it doesn’t sound like someone trying to sell you something.

It sounds like someone talking to you.

That micro moment of relatability? That crack in the polished façade?

That’s where trust is built. That’s where connection lives. That’s where conversions start.

Let’s Talk About Cover Letters (Brace Yourself)

To hammer home the big idea of this blog, let’s talk about one of the most painful experiences known to mankind:

Reading cover letters.

You’re hiring. It’s been a long week. You open your inbox and see 47 new applications for the role you posted. Great.

You brace yourself… and click the first one.

“Dear Hiring Manager,

Please accept this correspondence as my formal application for the aforementioned vacancy at your highly esteemed organisation…”

Oh god.

“My professional ethos is firmly anchored in synergistic alignment with mission-critical objectives and cross-functional stakeholder engagement…”

Why does it read like a year 12 legal studies essay?

“I would relish the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to your firm’s overarching vision via operational excellence and sustained intra-organisational cohesion.”

Are you kidding me!?

By the third one, your eyes are glazing over. By the fifth, you’re very close to making a fist-sized hole in your screen.

And then, like a cold beer in the middle of a heatwave, this lands in your inbox:

“Dear <Name>,

I know this is the part where I’m supposed to write some super-long sentence about my qualifications and how I am such a ‘motivated hard worker’, blah blah blah.

But let’s be honest… you’ve probably read (or will read) close to 60 of those cover letters in a row, right?

I don’t really want to add to your pain.

But I am incredibly excited about the opportunity to become your next <role>.”

BOOM!

You’re leaning in. Reading every word and smiling.

Because this person sounds real. Honest. Like a human being you’d actually want to work with.

And that right there, is the “dumb” little marketing hack we’re trying to hammer home.

In a sea of brands trying to impress, the ones that connect… just sound like people.

It’s not fancy.

It’s not complex.

But it works. Again and again.

Don’t Be a Robot in a World Full of Humans

If your ads, posts, videos, emails, captions—or whatever you’re putting out into the world—sound like they were made by a lifeless content calendar spreadsheet?

People will scroll right past.

But if you take a moment to speak like a human?

With a bit of edge, a bit of vulnerability, a bit of realness?

They’ll stop.

They’ll listen.

They’ll maybe even buy.

And you don’t need to reinvent the wheel.

Say what you mean. Keep it simple. Say it like you’re talking to a mate.

Here’s a dead-easy checklist for making your next post more human:

Would I say this out loud to a friend?

Would this make me stop scrolling?

Does this sound like a person, or a powerpoint presentation?

If it fails the human test—rewrite it.

Very Simple = Wildly Effective

We’re not just making this up.

The 2025 Hootsuite Social Trends Report backs it up loud and clear:

Last year, our trends survey revealed that above all else, people want to be entertained on social media. But brands weren’t meeting those expectations. Since then, organizations have stepped up their entertainment game.” [Hootsuite 2025 Report, page 7]

Translation: the polished, hard-sell stuff is fading into the background.

The “simple, real, human” content is what people are clicking, sharing, and actually care about..

That blurry photo with a cheeky caption? It might beat the $8,000 photoshoot because it feels more relatable.

That voice note-style TikTok filmed in a car? Could crush your studio-polished ad because it sounds like a friend, not a brand.

The message is clear:

Simple wins when it’s real. And real wins when it actually connects.
